Przejście na “Ty” / Bruderszaft
(colloquially called "brudzio", from the German Bruderschaft, "brotherhood")

My friend Szczepan in Warsaw created a dialogue to illustrate how two students might agree to switch to the informal form of address. The dialogue is between an older (Dawid) and younger (Idzi) student. Here is an abbreviated version:

Dawid: Panie Idzi, wydaję mi się, że mogę panu zaproponować bruderszafta.
Idzi: Oczywiście, panie Dawidzie, to jest Dawid, Idzi jestem!
Dawid: Fajnie/Świetnie, mów mi Dawid.

And here are some guidelines regarding who can/should propose switching to "Ty":

The principles of good manners dictate that the following hierarchy should be observed in proposing that the informal form of address be used:
  • starsi do młodszych / older to younger
  • kobiety do mężczyzn / women to men
  • wyżsi do niższych rangą / higher ranking to lower ranking
  • szefowie do podwładnych / bosses to subordinates
  • profesorowie do doktorów / professors to those with doctorates

In general, it seems that Poles seem to be becoming less strict about using Pan/Pani, particularly in firms. Perhaps this is the result of foreign influences and models of corporate norms of behavior that have been present since 1989.

I have read that nowadays it is quite common for people in companies to address each other informally, not only amongst people of similar status, but even with their superiors. This is surely not true universally, however!

So -- if in doubt, err on the side of caution and stick with Pan/Pani!

Zajęcia z dnia 17. 10. 2016 r.: Czy panu/pani smakuje? Czy pan/i lubi...?

Link to downloadable Word file.

Czy pani smakuje?

Detail from Frans Wouters (1612–1659),
"Allegory of taste", dated 1635–1659.

Czy panu/pani smakuje?

Literally: Does it taste [good] to you?

smak = taste
smakować = to taste; also with understanding that it tastes good

Czy panu/pani smakuje herbata?    Czy panu/pani smakują włoskie ciasteczka?

Do you like the tea?                     Do you like the Italian cookies?

NB: The thing you are asking about (tea, cookies) determines whether the verb is singular or plural.

Czy Pani Mariannie smakuje ta biała herbata?
Does Pani Marianna like that white tea?

Chyba tak. Nie pierwszy raz pije.
Probably. It's not the first time she is drinking it.

------------------------------

Czy pan/i lubi...?   Do you like...?

This is like in the sense of really liking something that you are familiar with. If you are asking whether something appeals to someone, use podobać się.

Czy pan/i lubi miód? Do you like honey?

Czy pan/i lubi muzykę? Do you like music?

(versus: Jak panu/pani się podoba ta piosenka? if the person is                            hearing it  for the first time, for example)

Czy pan/i lubi śpiewać? Do you like to sing?

Panu Idziemu nie smakuje ten napój, ale go lubi.
That drink doesn't taste good to Pan Idzi, but he likes it.

Pan Idzi lubi gorycz.
Pan Idzi likes [bitter things].

--------------------------------

Jak to ładnie pachnie! How nice it smells!
Jak ładnie pachną! How nice they smell!

Jak to śmierdzi! How it stinks!
Jak śmierdzą! How they stink!

Fuj! Yuck!

--------------------------------

Adjectives

Czy to krzesło jest wygodne? Is that chair comfortable?

Tak, jest wygodne. // Nie, nie jest wygodne.

nowy / nowa / nowe = new
stary / stara / stare = old

duży / duża / duże = big
mały / mała / małe = small

dobry / dobra / dobre = good
zły / zła / złe = bad

--------------------------------

Miscellaneous vocabulary

Właśnie!  Exactly! Precisely!

Mieliście szczęście. You were lucky! (That you didn't have to sing Christmas carols!)

w ogóle = at all

Czy pan nie słodzi w ogóle? You don't sweeten at all?

Przepraszam!  Excuse me! (e.g., if you step on someone's foot in the metro)
Nie szkodzi! No problem. (Lit. no harm done)

Zajęcia z dnia 17. 10. 2016 r. : Co robiliście?

Co robiliście?

Kto śpiewał?
Kto czytał?
Kto mówił?
Kto pisał?
Kto słuchał?

Przykłady:
Examples:

Pani Mercedes: "Słuchałam, śpiewałam, mówiłam (sama ze sobą), pisałam i czytałam."

Pan Dawid: "Słuchałem, czytałem i śpiewałem."

Najgorzej było z pisaniem. It was worst with the writing.
Najlepiej było ze słuchaniem. It was best with the listening.

Sam/a ze sobą = with myself (or sam/a z sobą)

Jak się pani ma?

NB: It is not just a rote question/response like in English ("How are you?" "Fine, thanks") - no one would be surprised if you told them really how you feel!

Odpowiedź: Mam się...

Piosenka dla Was - Upływa Szybko Życie

The first time I heard this song was one quiet evening in 1989 in Nürnberg's old town, sung by a melancholic (and drunk) Pole somewhere in the distance, across a deserted square.

Here below are the words they sing, which do not include all the stanzas ('bis' means to repeat). The English is just a rough, literal translation.

Upływa szybko życie, / Life flows away quickly
Jak potok płynie czas, /  Time flows like a stream
Za rok, za dzień, za chwilę, / In a year, in a day, in a while
Razem nie będzie nas. /bis / We won't be together.

O, jeszcze młodość nasza, / O, there is still our youth
jeszcze szczęśliwi my, / We are still happy
o, niech przynajmniej teraz / o, may there at least for now
nie płyną gorzkie łzy. / flow no bitter tears.

Razem nie będzie nas. / We won't be together anymore.

In the comments under this song, as if he or she had heard the Pole in Nürnberg, too, someone wrote:

Gdziekolwiek jesteśmy niesiemy Polskę z sobą
Wherever we are, we carry Poland with us

Here is another version, sung by the famous Polish pop singer Maryla Rodowicz - the complete words are below:

Upływa szybko życie, / Life flows away quickly
Jak potok płynie czas, /  Time flows like a stream
Za rok, za dzień, za chwilę, / In a year, in a day, in a while
Razem nie będzie nas. /bis / We won't be together.

I nasze młode lata / And our young years
Upłyną szybko w dal, / Will low away quickly into the distance
A w sercu pozostanie / And in our heart[s] will remain
Tęsknota, smutek, żal. / Longing, sadness and regret.

Więc póki młode lata, / So as long as [we have our] young years
Póki wiosenne dni / As long as [there are] spring days
Niechże przynajmniej teraz / Let there at least now
Nie płyną gorzkie łzy. / Flow no bitter tears.

Choć pamięć o nas zginie, / Although memory of us will be lost
Już za niedługi czas, / Already in a short time
Niech piosnka [sic] w dal popłynie / Let [a] song flow into the distance
Póki jesteśmy wraz. / As long as we are together.

And stanzas that neither of these versions sing:

A jeśli lasów koło, / And if the forests around us
Złączy zerwaną nić, / Are linked by a broken thread
Będziemy znów pospołu / We will together again
Śpiewać, marzyć, śnić. / Sing, [day]dream and dream.

Więc kiedy dziś stajemy / So today as we stand
Już u rozstaju dróg, / Already at the parting of the ways
Idącym w świat z otuchą, / Going into the world with courage
Niech błogosławi Bóg. / May God bless [you].
